Omega-3 Discoveries with EverlyWell


Do you know how the balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 can benefit your health?

Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids which means our bodies do not naturally produce them. This is why we must be sure to incorporate them into our daily diet.

I recently worked with EveryWell to take a snapshot of how my diet was serving me in this area by taking their Omega-3 Plus Test.

The Omega-3 Plus Test was a simple blood test that I took in the privacy of my own home. I was worried that pricking my finger would be painful, but it absolutely wasn’t. If you’re at all squeamish about blood you may want to have a buddy help you with the collection process, but rest assured EverlyWell makes it simple and straightforward, with very clear instructions. Before I mailed the test I registered my kit online and had results in one week’s time.

Omega-3 in particular has many important health benefits. It has the potential to reduce inflammation, promote neurogenesis (essential for brain health), and help fight heart disease just to name a few. Omega-3 are harder to source in the standard American diet where Omega-6 is prevalent to the point of excess. This is because soy oil is used in processed foods which are so prevalent in our culture.

I learned that when our bodies have more Omega-6 than Omega-3 there is an increase in inflammation which can cause an immense amount of harm in the body, from obesity to autoimmune diseases. The best way to achieve an optimal ratio is eat more foods rich in Omega-3s rather than to try to decrease  Omega-6 consumption. On average it will take 3-4 months to see changes.

My test scored me at a 5.2% whereas individuals with an index of 8-12% have a lower risk of heart disease, so I need to eat more Omega-3s.

I was instructed that eating more fatty fish is the best way to incorporate more Omega-3 into my diet. You know me and my passion for Mother Earth and sustainable practices that protect her.  The idea of eating fatty fish can be complicated with the current condition of our oceans and over fishing. I have decided it makes more sense for me to supplement using fish oils that are derived from sardines and anchovies. These little fish mass produce themselves and are less of a threat to the extinction of whales and dolphins. But I’ll continue to research this topic and seek to find the best practices that work for my body and for the planet.


Overall, this test helped me re-evaluate how my food is actually attributing to my health. This was an educational experience that will impact my health for the rest of my life.
